Houston is taking a bold step in redefining public art and community impact with a unique collaboration between the city of Houston, Midtown Management District, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and Career and Recovery Resources (CRR). This innovative project, Hue:Man Shelter, is bringing art to the forefront as a transformative tool for social change.
By the end of Sept, six new art installations will grace Houston, each co-created with individuals currently experiencing different stages of homelessness. Believed to be the first project of its kind in the United States, this initiative goes beyond beautifying the city. It challenges misconceptions and perceptions shared by the unhoused community while highlighting personal stories, equipping participants with valuable job skills, fostering a renewed sense of purpose and opportunity.

Art with Purpose throughout Midtown
The installations will appear at 2 Underpass Art Installations, 1 Mural, 3 METRO bus stations in Midtown, creating a blend of creativity and functionality. From large-scale physical pieces to compelling digital art, each work will stand as a testament to resilience and collaboration. This effort aligns seamlessly with CRR’s UpRise Enterprise program, which empowers individuals without stable housing to achieve self-sufficiency.
Empowering Through Collaboration
Each artists team involved in the project will collaborate with 4 – 6 unhoused Houstonians selected by CRR, Midtown, and artist teams. This partnership offers participants a chance to share their stories, determine the direction of the work and get real-world experience in areas such as time management, project planning, site preparation, and maintenance—essential skills that extend beyond the art world.
Nkechi Agwuenu of CRR encapsulates the project’s transformative power: “The artwork is going to feature what their life was. It’s showing everyone that this can be anybody. Life turns in any way, and they’re working really hard to make changes in their lives through our UpRise program. – Through the program and this collaboration, they’re finding hope.”
Supported by Visionary Investment
A generous $1 million grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies has made this initiative possible, highlighting the potential of public art to foster inclusive and societal progress. By merging artistic expression with real-world skills, this project offers participants a pathway to rebuild their lives while enriching Houston’s urban landscape.
This groundbreaking initiative illustrates the transformative power of art—not just as a means of expression but as a catalyst for change. Hue:Man Shelter, in collaboration with its partners, is turning vision into action, reshaping perceptions, and creating a city where creativity and humanity intersect in meaningful ways.
