Public Arts / Interactive Design / Creative Coding
Role: Digital Designer, Art Director, Creative Code
After over 20 years of teaching interactive design and 12 years as an art director and researcher, I made the deliberate choice to leave academia and focus on a new career in both Fine, Public arts, and digital design. This transition allows me to apply my experience and expertise in interactivity, interdisciplinary research, and collaboration to large-scale installations and community-engaged projects, further expanding my vision of fostering connections and provoking meaningful change through art and design.
Just recently, Some of my creative coding works were accepted to participate as part of a prominent public art initiative in Downtown Houston that merges immersive Innovative Projection Mapping, with community storytelling. This opportunity, alongside a 4 story water wall created by Scott Justice at One Experiential and a kiosk by Alex MaGee at AEM Creations, reflects my dedication to crafting impactful works that transform spaces, engage diverse audiences, and foster meaningful connections through art and design.
As a project, Brightlights is a project that fuses diverse creative practices with an experimental mix of coding languages—OpenGL, GLSL (OpenGL Shading Language), and HLSL (High-Level Shading Language)—while incorporating traditional motion design techniques. The original score and soundtrack integrate input from audio sensors through the Web Audio API, dynamically shaping the aesthetics and motion in real time.

Acknowledgements: Shout out to several organizations and Individuals who’ve also led this public art direction: Ann Taylor, the selection team, and everyone at Downtown Houston+; Scott Justis from One Experiential for leading the production and Projection Mapping; and AEM Creations, led by Alexander Magee, for their technical and Kiosk development. Thank you all!!
Bright lights also participated in Performance in Flux, a multi immersive initiative created by artist Tere Garcia, which was featured at Luminaria light and sound festival in San Antonio. Conceived as a platform for artists to express themselves through performance art, the program was born from the recognition of the need for immersive, multi-sensory spaces where artists can explore the layered dimensions of performance as an expressive medium.

Influenced by the experimental ethos of the Fluxus art movement, Performance in Flux seeks to transcend conventional artistic boundaries. From immersive happenings and spontaneous interventions to avant-garde multimedia experiences, the initiative celebrates the diversity and innovation inherent in performance art—embracing experimentation, collaboration, and the unknown.
