This project explores how weather and climate forecasting can be used to anticipate conditions favorable to COVID-19 outbreaks. Identified by the CDC as a key strategy in pandemic response, predictive forecasting tools offer public health officials valuable lead time to prepare for and mitigate future waves of infection.
Working in collaboration with the University of Maryland’s Institute of Human Virology, our team developed an experimental data visualization prototype that integrates climate variables with COVID-19 case data to reveal potential patterns of spread.
The Solution
We designed and built an interactive, globe-based visualization tool that maps overlapping climate and COVID-19 data along a focused east–west corridor between 30°–50° North latitude—a region of particular epidemiological interest.
The Solution
- We designed and built an interactive, globe-based visualization tool that maps overlapping climate and COVID-19 data along a focused east–west corridor between 30°–50° North latitude—a region of particular epidemiological interest.
- The system enables users to:
- Explore correlations between climate conditions and viral spread
- Navigate spatial and temporal datasets intuitively
- Investigate regional trends through layered visual data
- Gain actionable insights to support early decision-making
- A custom UI was designed to make complex scientific data accessible not only to epidemiologists and virologists, but also to public health officials and informed members of the general public.
