Kinetic Drawing
Sherman Finch (2026)
My work explores the intersection of mechanics, movement, and creativity through kinetic sculptures that guide and assist in the creation of drawings. Each piece functions as a physical collaborator, translating principles of motion—gravity, momentum, and centrifugal force—into expressive marks on a surface, allowing chance, rhythm, and serendipity to play a role in the creative process. I draw inspiration from artists such as Alexander Calder, whose mobiles redefine space and movement, and Jean Tinguely, whose self-operating machines challenge the boundaries between art and mechanics. By combining engineering, physics, and artistic intuition, my sculptures become tools for discovery, inviting both the artist and viewer into a dialogue with the unpredictable energy of motion.
