I participated in a group exhibition called “Re:Generate, Re:Image, Re:Focus, New Directions in Photography” at the Payne Gallery of Moravian College. This group exhibition explored contemporary visions and new frontiers in photo-based work including video, new media, and a variety of unique approaches to the over 150-year-old medium. The artists included in this exhibition deliberately incorporate their ‘process’ as an integral part of the concept behind the work. I represented the “New Media” component of the exhibition. My project, based on Japanese garden philosophy, explored the relationship between sound, image, and nature, exploring how technology functions as a synthetic substitute for an aesthetic experience. In the installation, you see a garden being projected while a sculpture of microphones are tied together and set up infront of the audience. The user’s voice is the driving force that activates the piece; as the user speaks, the video starts to follow a little girl walking through the garden. The microphones listen to the hi and low frequencies and control the playhead, moving the video footage forward or backward. Percussive sounds can manipulate aspects of the video like hue, saturation, and other filter effects in real-time. This is done through Processing and Arduino.
